The sum insured should represent the amount required to replace all domestic contents as new, except clothing and linen where insurers take into account the age and make an allowance for fair wear and tear. It can be a daunting task trying to remember the value of all your possessions, so why not try using our Contents Inventory ready reckoner to make the job a little easier.
The value to be insured varies considerably from home to home depending on the quality of furnishings, valuables and personal effects. You should remember to exclude fitted kitchens, bathroom suites and fitted wardrobes, which become part of the buildings as fixtures and fittings. The general rule of thumb is, if it is integral to the building it is a buildings item. If it is moveable it is probably a contents item. We recommend you ask us for advice.
Business equipment, liabilities and money will not be automatically insured without prior agreement. Unless you are insured under a specially designed 'Homeworkers' type policy, working from home could invalidate your insurance. It is advisable to check this with insurers and obtain their written agreement.
